Paraguay Clausura week five

A Friday double-header followed by a Saturday hattrick and rounded off with a solitary Sunday show, that’s week five in a nutshell. Here are the previews taking into account that Olimpia, Cerro Porteño and Guaraní all have midweek Copa Sudamericana matches.

Prediction: 2-0

Cerro’s winless run in the league continued last weekend when they failed to get past Carapeguá away. Rubio Ñu at home is an even easier fixture and they really should break their duck on Friday night. It is a similar team to last week but Roberto Nanni who scored in the previous two games is set to be replaced by Santiago Salcedo. Fidencio Oviedo also comes back into the side following suspension. Fossati has learned from his experience (vs Sol) that resting players for the Copa Sudamericana only to lose at home is bad for the relationship with the fans so they’ll be going out with their minds fully focussed on this game. Rubio Ñu are also without a win in the Clausura and have struggled for goals (2 in 4 games) so far. The previous two meetings between these teams have been exciting ones, Cerro coming on top both times, 5-3 and 3-2

Cerro Porteño XI (probable): Diego Barreto; Mariano Uglessich, Pedro Benítez, Cesar Benítez; Carlos Bonet, Fidencio Oviedo, Julio Dos Santos, Walter López; Jonathan Fabbro; Rodrigo López, Santiago Salcedo

SELECTED ODDS: Cerro win 1.61; Draw 3.5, Rubio Ñu 5.3

BEST BET: With both teams showing inconsistency betting on goals rather than the result could be a better option, Cerro usually score late-on so maybe it is worth looking at Over 1.5 goals in-play if they have a goalless first 30 mins

Libertad vs Sol de América
Tuyucuá
24/08/2012, 19:00

Prediction: 1-0

Libertad had an exciting end-to-end game against Olimpia last Saturday but this week’s game should be a return to type under Ruben Israel, keep things tight and obtain a professional victory. José Ariel Nuñez has been one of the best strikers in the league so far this season and is ably partnered by Pablo Velázquez, there is no doubt that combination can break down the danzarín defence to score.  Like Libertad, Sol de América have drawn three and won one so far this season, twice letting a lead slip against weaker sides (Rubio Ñu & Independiente). The performances of Lorenzo Frutos and Diego Vázquez up front has been admirable but this is the best defence they have come up against so far in the Clausura (they didn’t face Cerro Porteño’s first choice backline) and I’m not sure they’ll be able to breach the Libertad ranks. I’m expecting a close home win to end the run of three draws.

SELECTED ODDS: Libertad win 1.51; Draw 3.9; Sol win 6.2

BEST BET: Boring but safe, a home win

Libertad XI (probable): Rodrigo Muñoz; Jorge Moreira, Ismael Benegas, Gustavo Mencia, Miguel Samudio; Luis Cáceres, Sebastián Eguren, Sergio Aquino, Nelson Romero; José Ariel Núñez, Pablo Velázquez.

Cerro Porteño vs Guaraní

Estadio Gral. Pablo Rojas a.k.a La Olla
30/07/2012, 19:00
Prediction: 1-0

Cerro were in Chile on Thursday, hence the Monday kick off – Photo: Julio Dos Santos Twitter

Expect a good crowd for the defending champions first official home game of the season where they will show off plenty of new signings, add to that the almost derby status of this fixture. Guaraní started really badly with a home defeat in the Copa Sudamericana and I’ve said it a lot but worth repeating, goalscoring is their problem with no top class striker. In contrast Cerro scored three on Thursday night and if they defend competently this will be a winning start to the Clausura campaign. Both sides miss their main playmaker through injury, Jonathan Fabbro and Sergio Orteman respectively.

Cerro Porteño XI (probable): D.Barreto; L.Cardozo, P.Benítez, C.Benítez; C.Bonet, F.Oviedo, J.Dos Santos, D.Salcedo; A.Da Silva, G.Beltrán, R. López

Guaraní XI (probable): P.Aurrecochea; T.Bartomeus, A.Rodriguez, L.Cabral, E.Marecos; L.De la Cruz, M.Palau, J.Mendoza, B.Cáceres; D.López, C.Hidalgo

BEST BET: Last season Cerro had a habit of scoring late goals, in a tight game the Draw/Cerro bet at 4.4 looks interesting

O’Higgins vs Cerro Porteño preview

O’Higgins vs Cerro Porteño
Estadio El Teniente
26/07/2012, 20:30 (01:30 BST)

The Paraguayan champions take on the Chilean vice-champions in this intriguing clash in Rancagua, it is Cerro Porteño’s first Copa Sudamericana game since 2010. With a host of new signings during the close season the azulgrana are expected to make a big push for continental glory in this their centenary year.

Uruguayan coach will stick with his 3-5-2 system that has worked well so far, it is a fluid system with playmaker Jonathan Fabbro getting close to the strikers so at times looks like a 3-4-3. Carlos Bonet, recently acquired from Libertad, is set to make his debut at right wingback while Hernan Rodrigo López was registered just in time and is expected to partner Santiago Salcedo up front. Like Olimpia on Tuesday the emphasis will be on not losing with Fidencio Oviedo a key component in breaking up play.

O’Higgins are back on the international stage after a 20-year drought without the man who helped get them there, Enzo Gutierrez, who was snapped up by Chilean title winners Universidad de Chile. They will probably line up in their familiar 4-3-3 formation which includes Paraguayan Rodrigo Rojas in midfield. He is a dangerman but the away side look stronger all over the pitch and I expect Cerro to take at least a point here.

Cerro Porteño XI (probable): Diego Barreto; Luis Cardozo, Pedro Benítez, Cesar Benítez; Carlos Bonet, Fidencio Oviedo, Julio dos Sanots, Walter López; Jonathan Fabbro; Rodrigo López, Santiago Salcedo

Prediction: 1-1

Selected Odds: O’Higgins win 2.1, Draw 3.55, Cerro Porteño win 3.85, 1-1 scoreline 7.2, Under 2.5 goals 1.92

Best Bet: Backing Cerro DNB (Draw No Bet) looks pretty tempting at 2.46 as I don’t think they will lose and could overpower O’Higgins if they click offensively

Guaraní vs Oriente Petrolero preview

Guaraní vs Oriente Petrolero
Estadio Rogelio Livieres a.k.a Dos Bocas
26/07/2012, 18:15 (23:15 BST)

Guaraní begin their new era under fledgling coach Diego Alonso, the 37-year-old comes from Bella Vista in his native Uruguay. It is their fourth appearance in the Copa Sudamericana and they want to try and go one better than their previous participation in 2010 when they reached the 2nd round.

Pre-season friendlies have seem the aborigen line-up in a standard 4-4-2 and their strength certainly lies in midfield with plenty of options to toy with. The Uruguayan duo of Marcelo Palau and Sergio Orteman will try and dominate the game in central midfield, if Oriente give the latter too much space they will be punished. The youngsters Luis de la Cruz and Blas Cáceres seem to have been favoured on either flank but Alonso will have similar options on the bench with Dario Ocampo and Iván Gonzalez Ferreira.

Sergio Orteman will be a key figure – Photo: D10.com.py

Oriente Petrolero are one of the better teams from Bolivia and ended last season with a six-game unbeaten streak. They have one player who will know Guaraní well, the Argentine Danilo Carando was at Sportivo Carapeguá during the Apertura. I’ve been told by a Bolivian football expert that they ‘blow hot and cold’ and that inconsistency is evident in their away form in 2012, Pld 11 W 4 D 3 L 4, meaning the aurinegro will be hoping to catch them cold. Overall I feel the home team’s strength in midfield will be too much for their opponents and it should be a comfortable win.

Guaraní XI (probable): Pablo Aurrecochea; Tomas Bartomeus, Alejandro Rodríguez, Luis Cabral, Elvis Marecos; Luis de la Cruz, Marcelo Palau, Sergio Orteman, Blas Cáceres; Dante López, Carlos Hidalgo

Prediction: 2-0

Selected Odds: Guaraní win 1.61, Draw 4.0, Oriente Petrolero win 6.8, 2-0 scoreline 8.0, Under 2.5 goals 1.95

Best Bet: At the moment Guaraní cleansheet is 2.2 which seems generous considering only Cobreloa have scored away from home in the opening four Copa Sudamericana games, obviously a safer bet is the outright win

 Sportivo Luqueño –  Guaraní  ah0 guarani @ 1,95

Luque’s new coach Carlos Kiese has had time to get to know his squad in the break and has called up several youth team players because of the lack of quality he’s found. The auriazulhave won just one of their last five games. For Guaraní goals have been hard to come by this season but the side have only lost one in their last five games and keep getting better as time goes on under coach Pablo Caballero. They will have five players returning from La Paz none of whom played against Bolivia so they should benefit from having  trained intensively at altitude for a month. The aborigen are a better side and historically play well here, so it looks like an away win for them to stretch unbeaten streak away from home to four games.

Sol de América – Tacuary  -1ah sol @ 2,0

Sol de América could be missing topscorer José Ortigoza, other than that they have a clean bill of health with striker Lorenzo Frutos back from long-term injury and likely to resume his partnership with Enzo Prono up front. Before the break Sol were on a good run having recorded three consecutive wins. Tacuary needed this break more than any team, just eight points from their first 16 games this it is hard to understand what has happened to the team that qualified for the Copa Sudamericana last year. When these two met earlier in the year Sol won 6-2 having raced to a four-goal lead in twenty minutes, it won’t be as easy this time but they will win.

Guatemala – USA  2 @ 1,6

Guatemala has most their players from own league. out are star players Ruiz (in Mexico 2nd league, was before in LA Galaxy), papa (Chicago Fire), Minor López (La Serena, chile) and Alejandro Galindo (Santa Fe, Colombia but not playing there).
