Europe – UEFA U21 Championship, Ireland Rep U21 v Turkey U21

Changes to U21 squad for Turkey qualifier

The Republic of Ireland U21 squad has suffered a number of injury issues ahead of Tuesday’s crunch UEFA Championships Qualifying Group Seven clash with Turkey in Sligo (7.30pm).

Noel King’s side can leapfrog second placed Turkey with victory over their visitors.

Rhys Murphy (groin), Aaron Doran (hamstring), Gavin Gunning (groin), Jeff Hendrick (wrist) and Sean Murray (family bereavement) have all been all ruled out of the fixture.

Hendrick was taken off after 30 minutes of Derby County’s pre-season game v Chesterfield with a wrist injury and will see a specialist on Monday. Gunning picked up a groin injury in Dundee United’s Europa League Qualifier in Russia. Doran suffered a reoccurrence of a hamstring strain in the Inverness game against Kilmarnock. Murphy also has a groin strain and will stay in Holland for treatment.

Sean Murray has been excused from the squad due to a family bereavement.

Manager Noel King has called up Ronan Murray (Ipswich Town) for the game, which is expected to be a sell-out at the Showgrounds.

King said: “Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game but we have 18 quality players to pick from. It gives other lads a fantastic opportunity to stake a claim for a starting place and to show the talent in the squad.” Tickets are available from the Showgrounds.
